Toes help us balance. It’s very hard to walk without toes – people occasionally lose toes (to frostbite or infection, and so on) and they have to be taught how to walk properly again, and their walk style changes dramatically!

We believe that our ancestors may have had toes that were able to grasp on to branches and so on, but as we evolved into bipedal walking animals the toes’ function changed over time.
