Well, I first got interested in science by reading a little book called “the Adventures of Mr. Tompkins.” It’s a great little read about a man who falls asleep and dreams about the wonders of the Universe. It really captured my imagination and made me want to contribute in some way to science. So, I decided to take A-Level sciences (physics, maths and chemistry), go to university and see where science would take me from there! I’m currently doing a PhD in nuclear research!

This is a very geeky answer, I first got into science by watching Star Trek. I loved the idea of people flying around space, searching for new life, new civilisations…. Mr Spock was my favourite. After that it was one time reading about viruses and how they can kill and injure people in the news. Viruses are pretty scary, and at one time many people in society thought it was black magic or the devil what caused people to get ill

I first got interested in science when my mum (who is also a scientist) showed me a picture of human chromosomes in a book. I was quite young and thought it was very exciting. Then when I was at school, I quite enjoyed science but it was only really when I got to A-levels that I decided that I wanted to carry on studying it so I chose Biology at university and then did a PhD and this is where I ended up!

My parents were/are scientists and I was surrounded by research books and instrumentation from the early age. And I had a lot of science fiction to read, which by the way was very hard to get in the Soviet Union!
