      You have to ‘calibrate’ your egg timer with a better kind of a clock – like a stopwatch or something similar. If you calibrate your timer 10-15 times and average the measurements then you will have a pretty good idea how long your particular timer is set for. Note that egg timers (the kind that use flowing sand that is) are temperature-sensitive since the diameter of the constricted section that regulates the flow of sand changes as the glass expands or contracts.
